Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the viability, benefits, and
challenges of eco-friendly cultivation techniques in the floriculture
industry in Punjab, Pakistan, providing a roadmap for sustainable
growth. Methods: Research spanned across five representative regions
of Punjab, encompassing traditional, transitioning, and fully
sustainable farms. Quantitative data, including water and energy
consumption, yield, and waste generation, were collected, while
qualitative insights were garnered through interviews. The study
assessed various cultivation techniques, including soil management,
water conservation, pest management, energy consumption, and waste
management. Results: Sustainable farms showcased a considerable
shift towards organic and eco-friendly practices, with 40% adopting
organic fertilizers, 100% utilizing composting, and 80% employing
natural soil enrichment techniques. Water conservation efforts were
evident with unanimous adoption of rainwater harvesting and drip
irrigation. In pest management, 85% of sustainable farms implemented
IPM, leading to a 60% reduction in chemical pesticide use.
Conclusion: The floriculture industry in Punjab is witnessing a
transformative shift towards sustainability. Eco-friendly cultivation
practices, driven by both environmental and economic imperatives, are
gaining traction. The industry's future resilience and growth hinge on
balancing ecological responsibility with economic pragmatism.
